found that the transition to zero-emission vehicles will add between 40,000 and 180,000 net direct and indirect jobs in the sector by 2050, with workforce training required to prepare workers to move into the new jobs. Many of those new jobs, however, will pay less than their traditional counterparts, as wages in the traditional auto sector range from $26 to $60 per hour, while most jobs in the electric vehicles industry range from $17 to $21 an hour.
Clearly, decarbonizing the transportation sector in Texas will not be cheap. And hoping that changing consumer behavior alone will be enough to get us there is a pipe dream. Our recent survey of 124 people at the Houston Auto Show found that vehicle price, battery range and availability of charging infrastructure were the most important considerations for potential buyers.
