It was the Cougars’ first victory in the NCAA Tournament since 1994.
South Dakota, the Summit League champion, ends the season at 29-4.
Kennedy Warren had 21 kills on a .354 hitting percentage for the Cougars. Kortlyn Henderson added 14 kills on a .480 percentage. Kate Georgiades, the two-time AAC Libero of the Year, had 29 digs. Down 15-11 in the fourth set, South Dakota suffered a huge loss when star player Elizabeth Juhnke, the Summit League Player of the Year and national leader in kills, went down with an apparent leg injury. Juhnke had 17 kills, pushing her career total to 2,004.
The inspired Coyotes went on to win the fourth set, 25-23, on a service error to force a decisive fifth set. It was just UH’s eighth match this season to go five sets. The Cougars are 7-1 in those matches.
