Conservationists are also worried about an extra, acute pressure on seabirds that are already suffering from overfishing and climate change. Brown suspects a lot of the spread is due to human activity. For instance, people entering poultry farms might inadvertently carry the virus in on footwear. Or straw stored for use as bedding on poultry farms may previously have been exposed to wild birds.
