Calling the election is more about saving Tory furniture than victory. And Rishi Sunak wants to call it quits before he breaks records he doesn’t want to hold.

Every Tory “guru”, from Blighty to Down Under, was pushing the Conservatives to take advantage of their significant polling lead and call an early election.In keeping with her uptight and no-frills character, it was supposedly a walking holiday in the Welsh valleys that gave the then PM, Theresa May, the confidence required to return to Downing Street and make the call.

And second, if you are going to drag voters out to polling booths early, then you had best have a good reason to do so.. Sunak and the Tories find themselves 16 points behind Labour, according to the latest Freshwater Strategy UK poll. Surely, he would have let those green shoots grow a little, so voters could at least start to feel the improvements for themselves? Something doesn’t stack up.
