The fantasy of a post-Brexit “global Britain” is gone, but British Labour says it will be everywhere around the world, and all at once.

Already a subscriber?Only twice since World War II have the British general and US presidential elections run in the same year.

In 1992, new prime minister Paul Keating re-energised Australia’s Asian engagement as the magnetic currents of the Cold War trailed off. And he ignited a debate over the Republic by recalling the collapse of British imperial defence at Singapore in 1942.and the US, the overriding concern in Australia is neither the institutional nor political health of either country. Or even that Britain might be about to opt for sanity as the far right makes real gains across the Channel.

Last week, a string of commentators reassured the public that the most chaotic, ill-disciplined and untrustworthy US president in a generation would almost instinctively tick off on AUKUS. Given Canberra is pouring $6.81 billion into the US submarine industrial production base, they may well be right.Australia has made a down payment here, too, contributing $5 billion over the next decade to subsidise an expansion of British submarine production.

And there are already whispers around Whitehall that British Labour, looking at the strategic situation in Europe and Putin’s revanchism, may ultimately wobble in committing one of its currently seven operational nuclear-powered submarines to begin rotations to HMS Stirling in Western Australia. Those rotations are due to start in 2027.At least the incoming British Labour Party appears to have drawn back much of the Tories’ fantastically imaginative frontiers of a post-Brexit “global Britain”.
