Animal farmers have warned this year’s Christmas dinner could be at risk, revealing 600,000 free range turkeys have died or been culled due to bird flu.

Half of the free range turkeys produced for Christmas in the UK have already been killed in the bird flu epidemic

MPs on the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee held a hearing on Tuesday into the UKs current bird flu outbreak – asking experts from across the industry why this year’s epidemic has been ‘so serious and prolonged’. He warned: ‘There will be a big, big shortage of British free-range turkeys on the shelves this year.’He went on: ‘One guy I know in Norfolk, a wonderful little business. geese, ducks and turkeys and was supplying butchers and restaurants locally.Last month the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs announced a new package of support to help farmers cope financially with the impact of bird flu.

Defra sought to reassure people that while the ‘Eurasian strain of H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza is … is a very strong and infectious virus to poultry and other birds…the risk to human health is considered very low’.
