A series of volcanic eruptions have occurred in Iceland with the risk of more happening 'likely'

UK holidaymakers are warned to ‘stay away ‘ from certain areas of Iceland following a series of volcanic eruptions in the south-west of the country, the latest of which occurred on August 22. The UK Foreign , Commonwealth and Development Office has updated its guidance on travel to the country.

It warned travellers that more eruptions are ‘likely’ and urged them to closely follow local media. The recent eruptions have occurred on the Reykjanes peninsula and the town of Grindavik, along with the area north of it, has been affected. The FCDO said: “Recently there has been a series of volcanic eruptions on the Reykjanes peninsula in south-west Iceland, the latest on 22 August. These have affected the town of Grindavik and the area to the north of it. Icelandic authorities advise that you stay away from this area. All roads to Grindavik and the surrounding area are closed.”According to the Foreign Office, Keflavik International Airport is still operating normally and the road to it is unaffected.

But the FCDO does warn that ‘not all events can be anticipated’. It says that travel plans could be at risk due to: Travellers are urged to check alerts and advice from: the Icelandic tourist board, Icelandic Met Office, Safe Travel Iceland and Almannavarnir Facebook page.
