Breaking: UK Parliament rejects Theresa May's Brexit plan for the third time | NickdMiller
On Monday, MPs will meet to try to find a majority for a new Brexit plan, which could include a “soft” Brexit trade deal or even another referendum.
But the divorce deal had been voted down twice before by historic margins as pro-Brexit Conservatives allied with opposition parties to oppose the plan. Some prominent Brexiters, including Boris Johnson and Jacob Rees-Mogg, were persuaded to support the plan this time, saying it had come down to a choice between this form of Brexit or no Brexit at all.
Some Brexiters were also motivated by May’s pledge to resign if the deal was passed by Parliament, opening the door for a new prime minister who could be drawn from Brexiter ranks. “It is not in the national interest for the future of this country to be decided by a Tory leadership contest,” shadow solicitor-general Nick Thomas-Symonds said.
