Campaigners warn MPs 'somebody is going to die' over the level of pathogens in rivers
Residents in Devon were told to boil their tap water before consuming it by South West Water after 22 cases of a disease causing diarrhoea were confirmed in the region.
He added: “As temperatures are warming up tens of thousands of families are going to be in the rivers, on our beaches, going to lakes. I’m not exaggerating, somebody is going to die because of this pathogen level. Earlier this week, ministers announced that 12 river systems would now be tested for bathing water status, which was described by campaigners as a “modest start” compared to the 575 bathing sites on France’s rivers.
Ofwat boss David Black was asked by MPs how the regulator feels about the water bill increases water companies are introducing, bearing in mind the cost of living pressures many Britons are currently facing.“You’re absolutely right that many customers are hard-pressed. The idea that they can afford another £20 a year on their water bill is going to be very difficult for some customers,” he said.
