The Canary Islands are a popular destination for British holidaymakers but they are being warned about a weather phenomenon

Holidaymakers jetting off to the Canary Islands are being given an unusual warning regarding a strange and intensifying weather condition. As summer approaches, many will be heading to destinations like Tenerife and Lanzarote for a break but they are cautioned about "the calima".

While these storms might appear less frequently nowadays, when they do surface, their intensity is escalating. Hence, if your holiday happens to coincide with a calima, brace yourself for some potentially severe disruption.Since 1980, there have been 483 instances of calima, which translates into a yearly average of roughly 24 impacted days. These episodes typically stick around for approximately 1.8 days each.

Therefore, if your travel plans are bringing you to Tenerife, Gran Canaria or Lanzarote, chances are you will dodge the year's most brutal storms. Nevertheless, the authorities of the Canaries have already flagged pre-alert status for calima four times this 2022.
