Russia wants to cause 'pre-winter panic' in Europe by destabilising a key gas pipeline, Ukraine has claimed
The Kremlin said it could not rule out sabotage as the reason behind the damage. Russian President Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russia was concerned by the situation which could affect the “entire continent”.
“This is a very concerning news. Indeed, we are talking about some damage of an unclear nature to the pipeline in Denmark’s economic zone,” Mr Peskov said. “This is an issue related to the energy security of the entire continent.” Denmark’s energy agency confirmed earlier today that gas was seeping into the Baltic Sea from three separate leaks on the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines.Denmark’s Defence Command released footage of the leak, showing bubbles at the surface of the Baltic Sea near the island, creating a surface disturbance about 0.6 miles in diameter.
Bjorn Lund, of Sweden’s National Seismology Centre, was quoted in local media saying “there was no doubt that these were explosions.” The pipelines, which run between Russia and Germany, carry natural gas, but are currently not delivering fuel to Europe. The leaks occurred on the same day a key pipeline, designed to deliver gas from the Norwegian shelf via Denmark and through the Baltic Sea to Poland, opened.
