Ukraine called the reports a 'deliberate provocation' by Moscow, but appeared to imply some form of attack had been carried out by Russian anti-government partisans.
Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed there was a "terrorist act" committed.abc.net.au/news/united-states-russia-ukraine-hostage-sabotage-raid-g20-meeting/102047518Russia has claimed its security forces fought off a "terrorist act" in its southern Bryansk region, stoking fears that Russia could use the incident as an escalation point in its war on Ukraine.
Mykhailo Podolyak, an adviser to Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy, wrote on Twitter that Russia wanted "to scare its people to justify the attack on another country & the growing poverty after the year of war". "These are people who with weapons in their hands are fighting the Putin regime and those who support it … Maybe Russians will begin to wake up, realise something and take some concrete steps," Andriy Yusov told Ukrainian news outlet Hromadske.
He added that the "outcome document" of the meeting would stress the importance of reliable food and fertiliser supply chains and of a resilient energy supply, but there would be no consensus statement due to the Ukraine conflict. "Unfortunately, this meeting has again been marred by Russia's unprovoked and unjustified war against Ukraine," he said."Unfortunately, one G20 member prevents all the other 19 from focusing all their efforts on these issues the G20 was created for," German foreign minister Annalena Baerbock told the meeting, addressing Russia's Sergei Lavrov, according to the German delegation.
