Ukraine is winning the information war | Opinion
Zelenskyy has outfoxed Putin to rally his people and the world to the cause of Ukrainian independence.
Similarly, Ukrainian President Zelenskyy has taken advantage of digital tools to buck up his fellow Ukrainians and speak to the world. Imagine: A president using a smartphone to communicate to his people that he’s staying the course and that Ukraine will stand strong against Russian invaders. Smartphones barely existed 15 years ago, but now a selfie can be as effective as a Churchillian radio address to inspire a nation during a crisis.
By updating the Churchill playbook, Zelensky has created a new model that leaders in future crises will either emulate or at least study hard. It’s no small feat that the Ukrainian leader has outmaneuvered his Russian rival in the larger global arena.None of this is to say that Putin lacks a microphone. He has one, but he mostly reaches his own people with it, as well as some fellow authoritarians in China, Syria and Venezuela.
