Russian President Vladimir Putin says peace talks are at a 'dead end' as the battle for Mariupol enters a decisive phase and forensic investigators arrive in Bucha.

Joe Biden said Americans' ability to pay for petrol should not "hinge on whether a dictator declares war and commits genocide a half a world away".

Mr Biden has repeatedly called Mr Putin a war criminal, but has not previously declared that Russia has committed genocide in Ukraine.Mr Putin used a visit to the Vostochny Cosmodrome in Russia's far east, 5,550 kilometres from Moscow, to insist Russia would "rhythmically and calmly" continue the war in Ukraine, citing the need to achieve goals on security.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the US was not in a position to confirm reports of the use of chemical weapons in Ukraine. The battle for Mariupol appeared to be reaching a decisive phase, with Ukrainian marines holed up in the Azovstal steelworks. Russia said its campaign now aimed to capture more territory on behalf of separatists in the Donbas region, in Ukraine's east, which includes Mariupol.
