Russian President Vladimir Putin declared martial law in the four regions of Ukraine that Moscow illegally annexed, and has given additional emergency powers to the heads of all regions of Russia. United Nations pressure is increasing on Russia over the issue of Iran's alleged transfer of drones. Ukraine has accused Iran of violating a UN Security Council ban on the transfer of drones capable of flying 300 kilometres, and experts have been invited to view those which have landed. Russia has threatened that it could reassess its cooperation with the UN if it sends experts to Ukraine to inspect downed drones that Western powers say were made in Iran.
This week, Russia launched its most devastating attack on Kyiv since the invasion of Ukraine in February, killing and injuring some of those still in the capital, and crippling vital infrastructure.
