Proposed aid to Ukraine did not make it into the bill, but a bipartisan group of Senate leaders pledged to pursue funding for Kyiv in a separate measure.

Cars drive past the U.S. Capitol during a vote on a resolution to fund the government on Sept. 30. The Senate passed a short-term, bipartisan funding bill stripped of proposed aid to Ukraine. Proposed aid to Ukraine did not make it into a U.S. government funding bill passed by the Senate late Saturday, paving the way for Congress to avert a government shutdown that was otherwise set to start at 12:01 a.m. Sunday.

The group, led by Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell , said in a statement Saturday that it supports “Ukraine’s efforts to defend its sovereignty against [Russian President Vladimir] Putin’s brazen aggression” and that it will continue “to provide critical and sustained security and economic support for Ukraine.”

and that it may pass it as a stand-alone bill or as part of a larger funding package for the Defense Department.
