Downing Street has responded to Vladimir Putin's earlier announcement that countries buying gas from Russia must pay in roubles from tomorrow.
Asked if there were any circumstances in which Britain would pay in roubles, the spokesman said: "That is not something we will be looking to do." Megastar Angelina Jolie has been spotted in Rome today, visiting patients at a children's hospital who have fled Ukraine. The Treasury also expanded sanctions authorities to include the aerospace, marine and electronics sectors of the Russian economy.
They added that information about what is really happening in Ukraine"has to be getting through" to Mr Putin and it is slowly getting through to the Russian public. The Western officials also said Mr Putin clearly"did not understand Ukraine is a nation and Ukrainians feel they are Ukrainian" when he chose to invade - and the echo chamber around him"might well have reinforced that".
In a televised statement, Mr Putin said he had signed a decree to that effect, adding that the switch to roubles was designed to"strengthen our sovereignty" and protect Russian jobs.Robert Habeck, the economy minister, said he had not yet seen a new degree signed by Mr Putin mandating gas payments in roubles.
Britain's spy agencies are not typically known for being chatty and open, but that has changed since Russia started preparing for and then launched its invasion of Ukraine. In one of the highest-profile UK interventions, Sir Jeremy Fleming, the head of the intelligence and cyber agency GCHQ, made an extraordinary series of damaging claims on Thursday about what he called President Vladimir Putin's"personal war" in Ukraine.
Russian government officials will always try to dismiss or reject any negative allegations about the"special military operation" – they do not call it a war – in Ukraine. But the reality is that the goal of shaping narratives is something that can also be achieved with false or distorted data as demonstrated by President Putin.
