Residents in Kyiv are digging trenches in the city centre as Russian troops await just a few miles from the outskirts of the capital. Live updates:
Russian forces have reportedly made progress in their slow advance on Kyiv, with fighting said to have been raging outside Ukraine's capital.Meanwhile, tanks and artillery continue to pound places already under siege with shelling so heavy that residents of the southern port city of Mariupol were unable to bury the growing number of dead.
In Mariupol, relentless barrages into the city have thwarted repeated attempts to bring in food and water and evacuate trapped civilians - although it is hoped the situation could be eased slightly by the opening of humanitarian corridors today, This picture, captured by an Associated Press photographer, shows the moment one side of an apartment block in the besieged city of Mariupol is enveloped in a billowing orange fireball.
The UK's Ministry of Defence says Russian aircraft supporting ground forces are mainly"relying on unguided 'dumb' munitions" which are"indiscriminate" and"significantly increases the likelihood of civilian casualties" Arch Hades told Sky News the bombardment of Ukraine was"abhorrent" and insisted most Russians oppose"Putin's war".
Footage shared by officials in the presidential office appears to show armed men escorting a man out of a building in the city centre.
