I talked to old friends in Washington the other day to take a sounding of the political elite’s views regarding the endgame in Ukraine.They unanimously agreed the hawks had wrested complete control over the foreign policy establishment, and that the war in Ukraine had taken a back seat to preparations for the coming conflict with China .Moscow is seen more as a nuisance, while Kyiv is clearly a distraction.

Ukraine’s military death toll has already surpassed the 58,000 US personnel who lost their lives in the whole of American involvement in the Vietnam War.In what is mostly an artillery and stand-off weapons war, the wounded are sitting ducks. The US should be leading the charge, but it isn’t; instead, it’s on the sidelines, trying to figure out what to call this latest tragedy in American diplomacy.
