Even as the war-torn nation defends its homeland against the Russian invasion, it is delivering major shipments to vulnerable populations.

Ukraine hopes to ratchet up delivery of humanitarian grain aid to Africa and the conflict-ridden Middle East in the coming months as it seeks to deepen diplomatic ties and counter Moscow’s influence in the regions.

People gather to collect water in Khartoum, Sudan, last year. The Sudanese army and a rival paramilitary force have been battling for control of the country since mid-April.Ukrainian Agriculture and Food Security Minister Solskyi Mykola said despite the challenging circumstances at home, Ukraine’s farmers remained committed to maintaining their key role as guarantor of food security.

Farmers use combine harvesters to harvest a wheat field near the city of Bila Tserkva in Kyiv Oblast, Ukraine, in August.Under the Grain From Ukraine program, launched by President Volodymyr Zelensky in late 2022, more than 170,000 tonnes of Ukrainian grain have been successfully delivered to several African countries, including Somalia, Ethiopia, and Kenya as well as war-torn Yemen. Gaza may follow.

He said Ukraine’s efforts were first driven by a moral obligation, but it was hoping to open several new embassies and gain better diplomatic ties in Africa to help free many nations on the continent from Russia’s grip. Ukraine’s agricultural exports have long been vital for many countries in the continent. Before the war, Ukraine supplied more than 15 per cent of the world’s corn exports, 10 per cent of wheat, 15-20 per cent of barley, and more than 50 per cent of sunflower oil.But Solskyi said in two years of war, more than 20 per cent of agricultural land – around 7 million hectares – have been lost to the conflict.
