Ukraine thus far have the highest medal county of any nation, according to Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin.

Five Ukrainian World Games athletes spoke about the Russian invasion, Birmingham's hospitality and more on Sunday, July 10 | The World GamesUkrainian athletes - competing with heavy hearts as the war with invading Russia drags on there - have shown well so far in Birmingham.

“I’m glad to see America as a country stand with Ukraine,” Woodfin said to open up the press conference. “It’s wonderful. We were here for two weeks, we had a training camp before this competition, and the way how people treated us was amazing,” said Stanislav Horuna, who won a silver medal in men’s karate. “I’m really amazed… about the emotions people feel regarding us, when they hear that we are from Ukraine. We can literally feel the support that they feel. And this is very nice.”“I was amazed about the heart of every American person who was on my way, and in touch with us,” she said.

Other athletes also thanked U.S. and Birmingham citizens for their support, and at times got emotional.
