AFL: A wild ending to the VAFA Division 2 Under 19s Grand Final has seen a free kick and 50-metre penalty paid on the siren to hand Uni Blues the win over Old Camberwell.
An amateur grand final in Melbourne has ended in the most histrionic of manners on Sunday, with a controversial umpiring decision the very centre of proceedings.
Unbeknown to them however, a field umpire had called a free kick for tripping in favour of the Blues right as the final siren sounded. Those from the Camberwell camp stood around in total disbelief at the umpire’s contentious decision to bring the ball downfield. With the initial free kick paid roughly 60 metres out from goal, the secondary infringement left the Blues with a simple shot in front of goal further down the field to win the premiership.
Ironically, University Blues fans on the sidelines ran onto the ground as the goal went through, putting an end to one of the wilder grand final matches at local level in recent times - with the final scoreline ending 44-45 in favour of the Blues.
