Sky News host Alan Jones says the High Court’s “unanimous decision repudiating years of vile attacks against Cardinal George Pell” was a “stunning intervention in the most controversial court case since Lindy Chamberlain”.

Mr Jones said the unity displayed by the High Court judges in the seven-nil ruling “prompts the question of how Victoria’s Criminal Justice system allowed the case against Pell to proceed so far”. According to the High Court, there was "a significant possibility that an innocent person had been convicted because the evidence did not establish guilt to the requisite standard of proof,” Mr Jones said.

Mr Jones said the Victorian Bar President, Matt Collins, described the initial conviction of Pell as "highly unusual", having been made on behalf of a victim who had never reported abuse. After the High Court decision, Cardinal Pell issued a statement saying “my trial was not a referendum on the Catholic Church, nor a referendum on how church authorities in Australia dealt with the crime of paedophilia in the church”.
