The Netflix Spanish crime thriller Unauthorized Living concluded after two seasons with a shocking ending that saw Nemo's crime empire crumble.

Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT The Netflix-exclusive Spanish crime thriller Unauthorized Living concluded after two exciting seasons with an explosive ending that left Nemo's criminal empire in shambles.

Debuting in 2019, the series follows Galician drug cartel leader Nemo Bandiera's attempt to secure the future of his criminal enterprise after he is diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. Complete with all the twists and turns of the most engaging crime thrillers, Unauthorized Living added the fascinating wrinkle of Bandiera's family life which presents tragedy of nearly Shakespearean proportions in every episode. Betrayals waited around every corner for the ailing mob boss and his inner struggles made Unauthorized Living so compelling. Though the series was somewhat buried beneath the mountain of other original content added to the streamer on a monthly basis, Unauthorized Living still managed to exceed many of the best Spanish shows on Netflix. The preeminent streaming service has long been the home of content from around the globe, but Unauthorized Living season 2 seemed to speak to a promising future for the show. However, the series was unceremoniously canceled after its second outing, which meant that the shocking finale of season 2 would also have to serve as the series finale as many of the show's disparate storylines were wrapped up quickly.Nemo's Final Plan Explained Throughout both seasons of Unauthorized Living the main storyline involving Nemo's potential successor took center stage as the series began to resemble other popular TV dramas. However, dotted across the series landscape were various criminal comings and goings that demanded Nemo's somewhat divided attention. When not evading the law, Nemo was forced to deal with the rival Artegas gang, a Mexican drug cartel that had traveled to Spain to do away with their competition. Despite his rapidly failing health, Nemo devised a plan to quickly rid himself of the Artegas crew all in one fell swoop. Under the banner of a false truce, Nemo invited the Artegas crew to the Bandiera compound to talk business. Unfortunately, Nemo was suddenly struck with a bout of confusion due to his Alzheimer's and wandered away to sit on the beach. In a fit of rage, Artegas leader German shot his son Daniel thinking had been betrayed since Nemo was nowhere to be found. German took Lara hostage and planned to shoot her, but was instead shot by Daniel who had recovered enough to dispatch his father. The duo died in each other's arms, a tragic and fitting end to the Artegas crew.Shows like Succession focus on shady families and their internal struggles, and Unauthorized Living presents plenty of King Lear-esq drama involving Nemo and his offspring. In some ways, the end of the Artegas family was a foreshadowing of the end of Nemo himself, and how family really was the most important part even throughout all the mayhem and illegal destruction. German's propensity for hard-nosed violence would be his final undoing, as his paranoia led to his downfall just like Nemo predicted. Chon Divorces Nemo To say that Chon and Nemo's relationship was rocky would be putting it lightly, but the couple finally called it quits officially in the final episode of Unauthorized Living. It wasn't Nemo's violent choices or even his philandering that killed off the relationship, but Chon's burgeoning relationship with Nemo's doctor which allowed her to extricate herself from her mob boss husband. What is most telling about Nemo's character though, is his rather nonchalant response to the news. Instead of being upset with her decision, he merely received her blankly which spoke to the fact that their relationship was loveless all along. Lara And Mario Get Together In many ways, Mario was the actual antagonist of Unauthorized Living, as his bad choices most affected the characters around him and jeopardized Nemo's enterprise. Despite this glaring fact, Mario got away with almost no punishment as he started a new relationship with Nemo's daughter Lara in the final episode. He was able to quickly wrap things up with Nina , whom he had a child with, as the former couple agreed to co-parent while Mario did his own thing. While Mario wasn't made Nemo's successor, his closeness to the family does ensure he could receive benefits from Nemo's legitimate enterprises which his children inherit. Nemo's Hallucination On The Beach After setting a plan in motion to end the Artegas threat once and for all, Nemo was struck with one final bout of Alzheimer's disease-induced confusion, and he wandered away from the series' climax to be alone. He found his way to the beach where he blankly stared out at the ocean, totally lost in a hallucination. Representations of old age on TV are hit or miss, and though Unauthorized Living isn't the best representation of Alzheimer's, there is symbolic meaning behind Nemo's plight. While lost in his haze, Nemo hallucinated seeing Lara's mother Ada in the waves, and she beckoned him to join her. Considering his uncaring response to Chon's divorce, it is clear that Nemo's one true love was actually Ada, which is why he saw her at the very end. The ocean is packed with symbolic meaning, and it often represents the giving of life as well as the overpowering strength of nature which mankind cannot overcome. Ada welcomed him to the other side because Nemo had long come to grips with the fact that his diagnosis would be fatal, which is why he was so accepting of death instead of bitterly fighting it at every turn. Does Nemo Survive? As is the case with most drug lord shows, Unauthorized Living had a tragic but fitting ending for Nemo as his life of crime finally caught up to him. Though he wasn't dispatched by an enemy or arrested by the police, it was his own henchman who pulled the trigger at the elder Bandiera's request. Nemo had previously divulged his illness to Ferro , his enforcer, and requested that the goon end his life when things finally got too bad. Finding his boss on the beach in an unresponsive daze, Ferro killed Nemo in order to fulfill the promise. Fittingly, Ferro asked Nemo to name his children which he could not do. This detail was most likely not an accident, as it spoke to the fact that his family really was the most important part for Nemo all along. Ferro suffers greatly in his dark duty since he is tasked with killing his boss and friend, without many even knowing about Nemo's illness. While that would likely spell trouble for Ferro after the fact, the mercy killing could be chalked up to a murder by the Artegas gang if it was arranged just right. The Real Meaning Of The Ending Of Unauthorized Living In a lot of ways, the ending of Unauthorized Living was the culmination of the classic adage that crime does not pay. However, Nemo's fall was different from characters in other crime fiction, since he didn't die by the hand of an enemy or find himself incarcerated for life. Instead, he was essentially killed by himself which is the same thing if analyzed deeper. Nemo's Alzheimer's diagnosis represents his body turning against him, and with his mind slipping, he is betrayed by his own biology in the same way a trusted lieutenant could stab him in the back.As previously mentioned, Unauthorized Living is a lot like the William Shakespeare play King Lear, in which a king in the grip of madness is betrayed by his own children. While Nemo's kids are relatively loyal, the seeds of greed are planted by Mario who will stop at nothing to gain power. Mario and Nemo are revealed to be very much alike by the end of Unauthorized Living, as they both philander and care more about finances than friends and family. Unlike Nemo though, Mario wasn't given a chance to learn the error of his ways.
