The Australian Border Force commissioner said Victorian officials raised no objections to the travellers flying to the state via Sydney last week despite an outcry over the weekend at the arrival of up to 65 passengers. coronavirus covid19 auspol s...

Mr Outram told a Senate estimates hearing in Canberra the meeting at Melbourne Airport last Friday at 2pm discussed the issue of passengers from New Zealand and heard no objections from Victorian officials.

"It’s clear that once somebody comes into NSW and they are exempt by NSW Health for quarantine because they are low risk, they are then free to move around. And they’re subject to the same state laws as everybody else in terms of domestic travel." Mr Andrews said on Monday the number of people who had arrived in Victoria from New Zealand had risen to 65 from an earlier estimate of 55 and an original claim of 17 based on advice from federal authorities.

"Victorian borders remain open and there is no requirement to quarantine after travelling domestically to Victoria," said the email from the department to a person enquiring about travel from New Zealand to Melbourne via Sydney. Population Minister Alan Tudge said he was "perplexed" at the way Mr Andrews had attacked the federal government over the weekend when Victorian officials accepted the arrival of New Zealand passengers."We don’t want to argue with him over these matters because they were discussed at officials’ levels, they were agreed by the Victorian government according to their own internal emails," Mr Tudge told radio station 2GB.
