Eleanor Patterson has done it! FULL STORY 👉
Eleanor Patterson has stunned the world, becoming the first Australian to win high jump gold at the World Athletics Championship.
Patterson had never cleared two metres outdoors prior to the event, and twice failed to jump 1.98m as she stared down the barrel of missing the medals. The former Commonwealth Games gold medallist then pulled out a clutch third jump and only got better from there, clearing two metres on her second attempt, and 2.02 metres on her first.
The Ukrainian was again favoured to win on Wednesday, but Patterson reached new heights when it counted most. She failed to qualify for the final in Rio two years later, and then quit athletics altogether in 2018 having missed out on selection for the Commonwealth Games.
