When tragedy strikes a small country town, the ripples are felt throughout the community, but it can also bring people together.

abc.net.au/news/biggenden-community-rallies-around-family-after-shed-fire/101832300When tragedy strikes a small country town, the ripples are felt throughout the community, but it also brings it together.

Robbie Radel — a family friend and deputy mayor of the North Burnett Regional Council — said the entire community was going through "unbelievable heartbreak". Founded during the gold rush era, Biggenden sits on North Burnett's Isis Highway, about an hour's drive west of Maryborough. But now a sign sticky-taped to the window explains that "due to unforeseen circumstances, the bakery will be closed", with "sincerest apologies from management and staff".Biggenden residents are a mix of retirees, property owners and families whose children attend the only school in town — where Kirra was completing year 4."Kirra was a very popular young lady at school … and [my son] always got along with her," he said.

Moira Thompson, who has lived in Biggenden since she was in primary school, said it was those strong personal ties that were helping the town cope with tragedy."It's what brings calm and harmony to people."Days after the shed fire, businesses, volunteers and residents rallied at a Christmas dinner at the town's memorial hall.
