Ukrainian soldiers who surrendered after holding out in the besieged Azovstal steelworks in Mariupol are being held in a penal colony.

Their dogged defence of the last stronghold in Mariupol, where 20,000 civilians are thought to have died in Russian bombardments, had become a symbol of Ukraine’s resistance.

Russian defence ministry spokesman Maj Gen Igor Konashenkov said 959 Ukrainian soldiers have now left the plant But Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said: ‘There can be just one interpretation: The troops holed up at Azovstal are laying down their weapons and surrendering.’
