A new book by former NSW police minister Carl Scully and former NSW police assistant commissioner Mark Goodwin will detail the undercover operations which took place in the days following the Cronulla riots.

The Cronulla riots took place in December 2005 and saw violence erupt on the streets of the beachside suburb with 26 people treated for injuries.

“We look very deeply in the book at the revenge attacks, of course, and what occurred and that included a hand grenade that was going to be thrown into the Northies Hotel beer garden the following weekend, which was an undercover operation that took that off the street,” Mr Goodwin told Sky News host Erin Molan.Mr Scully added that the public was “terrorised” but didn’t realise how bad the situation could have got.

“We had intelligence – provable, demonstrable intelligence – that Uzi machine guns had been bought,” he said. “There was an attempt on the black market to buy a stolen military hand grenade. Baseball bats from Newcastle, Wollongong had been sold out and we needed to respond.”
