A public inquiry has exposed the shocking case of an undercover police officer who maintained a long-term, deceitful relationship with a woman, fathering a child with her while simultaneously being married to another. The revelations have left both women devastated and raise serious questions about the ethics of undercover policing.
An undercover police officer who built a deceptive, 19-year relationship with a woman using a false identity, fathered a child with her, and remained married to another woman throughout the duration of this deceit has been revealed through a public inquiry. The officer, whose true identity has been kept confidential, concealed his real name and profession from the first woman, fabricating a persona as a businessman to gain her trust.
Unbeknownst to her, he was simultaneously married to another woman, a fact only uncovered recently by the public inquiry. The revelations have left both women devastated. The first woman, known only by the pseudonym Gabriella, remains silent on the matter. Close relatives of Gabriella have stated publicly that the experience has shattered her, transforming her into a shell of her former self. The undercover officer's deception extended into Gabriela's family circle, who have also suffered immeasurably from this betrayal. Police informed Esther, the second wife identified by a pseudonym, in 2021 that her husband had fathered a child with Gabriella during their relationship, a revelation that has significantly impacted her well-being. The extent of Esther's marriage to the undercover officer remains unclear, including the specific years involved. It is now established that they are divorced. The inquiry, led by retired judge Sir John Mitting, is focusing on the deployment of undercover officers to monitor over 1,000 political groups between 1968 and at least 2010. In a later phase, the inquiry will delve into another facet of undercover policing – deployments within criminal gangs. It is important to note that the undercover officer in this case was not involved in the surveillance of political activists and had a different mandate focusing on gathering intelligence about criminal activity. Gabriella, identified in a previous instance by The Guardian as Mary, has stated that she had no connection to criminal activity and was not involved in his deployment
