Fosterville Gold Mine said it experienced a "mine-induced seismic event".
The quake was recorded at Fosterville Gold Mine, about 26km north-east of Bendigo, at 6.41am today, according to Geoscience Australia.Geoscience Australia's Senior Seismologist Jonathan Bathgate said the quake was minor and any aftershocks weren't expected.
"Often times, with earthquakes of this size, people report hearing them more than they do the shaking because they are quite short.Fosterville Gold Mine confirmed it experienced a "mine-induced seismic event". According to its website, its activity changes the pressure of force applied to the rock being mined which can lead to it fracturing and releasing a ground vibration. Geoscience Australia has recorded 38 earthquakes in Victoria this year alone, ranging from magnitudes of 1.4 to 4.3, which was felt in Leongatha on February 8.
