People have been aware of photoshopped images in magazines and on social media for years, but a new study has found young women are less likely to believe that videos can also be edited.
abc.net.au/news/advanced-social-media-filters-allow-altering-of-body-in-videos/102748654TikTok and Instagram users are using undetectable technology to alter their bodies in videos to become the stereotypical Barbie-like figure. The applications have advanced over the past two years, and seamlessly allow women to make their waists smaller, breast larger, legs thinner and a whole host of other hyper-realistic alterations.
Body image researcher Dr Veya Seekis said constantly seeing a certain body-type online can have detrimental effects on women's self-esteem."When young vulnerable women are viewing that type of content, they're likely to compare themselves with actually very unrealistic standards," she said. "Eighty-three per cent of young women thought that images could be edited using applications, but only 62 per cent thought that videos could be edited," Dr Fardouly said.
"We've only seen emerging research, but that research has been really promising ... viewing body-positive content can increase body satisfaction and make us feel better about ourselves," she said. She has since attracted more than 350,000 followers across both apps, many of whom are young women learning to love their real bodies.
"The difference between where I am now and where I was as a young woman is that I can now catch myself when I start comparing myself to other people."
