The economic sanctions and military and diplomatic threats from Beijing escalated as the US speaker met with Taiwan’s legislature and President Tsai Ing-wen. Taiwan
Nancy Pelosi says she will not be intimidated by Beijing as China sanctioned more Taiwanese companies and surrounded the island with military exercises in retaliation to the visit of the US House Speaker to Taipei.
Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, centre left, meets Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen, centre right, and other members of the legislature in the president’s office in Taipei, Taiwan.“Our visit was about human rights, and it was about unfair trade practices and the security issue of dangerous technologies being transferred to rogue countries,” she said. “So over the years, it’s always been about security, economy and governance.
Tsai said Taiwan was committed to maintaining the status quo across the strait and accused China of fuelling tension in the region. China warned airlines to avoid flying in areas around Taiwan as the exercises got underway. The drills were expected to last until Sunday.“We do have a situation where we see rhetoric increasing, and we see military hardware being deployed,” she told ABC radio. “I understand this is a very concerning situation for everyone. What we need to say to all parties is that the region wants peace and stability.
“The Chinese People’s Liberation Army is on high alert and will launch a series of targeted military operations to counter it, resolutely defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity, and resolutely thwart external interference,” said Defence Ministry spokesman Wu Qian.
