'It is extremely scary to live a normal life knowing that, if one day you do something slightly wrong, you could be stopped and asked for an ID — that you don’t have — and then being deported.'
Besides transportation issues, Margaret’s family has to grapple with the high cost of living in the Boston area. Increasinglys are forcing them to move further from the city center. That creates its own problems, as proximity to public transportation is essential for people without a driver’s license.
“If we had a license, we wouldn’t be worried about finding a place we can afford that is still not too far from the city and from public transportation,” Margaret says.But trying to balance housing affordability with staying close to public transit is just one way undocumented immigrants are affected by being denied driver’s licenses.
“Survivors often need to leave quickly, perhaps packing up themselves and their children while an abuser is at work,” Deutsch tells. “For someone living in an isolated rural area without a car, this can be next to impossible. Without a driver's license, it is illegal to drive or register a car. Survivors who are already living in fear shouldn't have to face the prospect of committing crimes in order to get themselves and their children to safety.
Activists and organizers also have to contend with fierce opposition in some states to the bills that would grant driver’s licenses to undocumented people. In New York,
