Geelong’s Zach Tuohy has defended teammate Tom Stewart’s bump on Dion Prestia as an “unfortunate accident” as the AFL rejects the possibility of a new send-off rule despite calls from former players and commentators.
On Sunday, Tuohy defended the 29-year-old, highlighting the quality of his character both on and off the field. Stewart was reported on the spot for rough conduct, but was able to remain in the game until its nailbiting conclusion, sparking debate about whether the league should introduce a send-off rule in instances such as these. An AFL spokesperson said a new send-off rule was not on the cards, and that no review or process to establish such a rule was being considered.
“He [Stewart] shouldn’t be rewarded by being able to stay on the field and get best on ground while Richmond lose their best player and lose the game as a result.”
