Pérez has filled up the strike zone since being moved into a mop-up role.

Pérez was shifted to the bullpen as a long reliever. The club’s actions have made it clear he is more mop-up man than anything else. When the Rangers decided to pull Andrew Heaney after 1.2 innings in San Francisco Saturday, Pérez was not the choice. Instead, manager Bruce Bochy went to Grant Anderson, partly because manager Bruce Bochy wanted a right-hander to face San Francisco’s Austin Slater.

The role also makes Pérez — at this point — unlikely to make a playoff roster should the Rangers make the postseason. Mop-up men are a luxury playoff teams can’t afford as everybody must have a role for a high-leverage situation. Pérez has appeared in the postseason twice, with the Rangers in 2015 as a starter and in 2021 with Boston as a reliever.Since moving to the bullpen, he’s pitched three scoreless innings with no walks, but both have been lopsided wins.

He has, however, done exactly what is asked of a mop-up man: Throw strikes and finish the game. He’s thrown 24 of 27 pitches for strikes in the role. “He’s been a pro and worked hard,” manager Bruce Bochy said. “He’s been a good soldier through it all. Who likes being in that position? But it says a lot about the man that he’s approached it the way he has.”
