University of Technology Sydney was warned it risked being cut off from students in China if it included politically sensitive material, including disputed territories, in online teaching | AnnaPattySMH
A Sydney university was warned it risked being cut off from students in China if it included politically sensitive material, including disputed territories, in online teaching.
The draft report, dated February 7, said that, while the university could share content that was normally accessible around the world, "the concentrated access and activity via Chinese networks occurring now and over the coming weeks, raises a risk that the Chinese Government will see this as "unapproved teaching" in China and turn off our 'uts.edu.au' domain and other related systems".
UTS Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Shirley Alexander said she rejected the advice about adapting teaching content. "I also asked them to do a risk assessment and that risk assessment correctly identified the fact that there were certain technologies that just did not work beyond the Chinese firewall," she said.It includes references to the use of technology including UTSOnline as well as Zoom, Microsoft Teams and other online platforms."Students are learning the content that all students learn. We wouldn't change the content just to suit the students who are in China. We would not do that.
