Victorians will continue to face bare shelves as unionists block workers from returning to a key Woolworths distribution center. The ongoing strike by over 1500 workers from the United Workers Union has lasted for 12 days, leading to stripped shelves at major supermarkets. Despite efforts to resume operations at the Melbourne South Regional Distribution Centre, unionists are preventing staff from returning.

Woolworths on Sunday said operations would resume at Melbourne’s South Regional Distribution Centre, which represents 42 per cent of the impacted stock flow, after contacting nearly three quarters of the team and a majority indicated they wanted to return on Monday. “As long as they continue to block access to our site, our customers will continue to face shortages on shelves in Victoria,” a Woolworths spokesperson said.“Their members at the site have every right to take industrial action, but it’s not right to stop people working who want to work, and customers being able to access their essential food and grocery products in our supermarkets.”

UWU National Secretary Tim Kennedy said Woolworths imposed working standards and conditions at the start of the year which had resulted in 2,200 individual disputes with the Fair Work Commission.
