NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet has slammed the hijacking of the federal government’s jobs summit agenda by trade unions, arguing their push will fail to lift productivity and wages.

As the Albanese government offered support to the union push for multi-employer pay and strike arrangements in lower-paid industries, Mr Perrottet told reporters in Sydney on Sunday: “I’m disappointed it seems to be that the jobs summit to many degrees has been overtaken by the unions.James Alcock“We need a labour shortage discussion and skills shortages engagement to make our people have the opportunities that they need and that’s what I want to get out of the summit this week.

But there remain differences between business and unions on workplace relations, particularly industry-wide enterprise bargaining agreements. “Our expectations are realistic. We know that people have a range of views, and we’re not looking for unanimity.”Dr Chalmers expressed interest in multi-business pay and strike arrangements in select industries, saying the summit was an opportunity to “see where there is some common ground perhaps in some industries, around multi-employer bargaining and to see if we can move forward together on this front”.

The ACCI boss also warned against a two-tier system between union-approved and non-union backed EBAs to make the Better Off Overall Test more flexible, as the Morrison government came close to securing after a surprise deal between the Business Council of Australia and the Australian Council of Trade Unions.“It has to be for everyone, and we can’t have a two-speed system where there is a fast-track and a slow track,” Mr McKellar said.

“So, most of that happens at an enterprise level: people sit down with their workers, they adopt new machinery, they do training, they work out processes, they look at their markets, they look at their customers, and they do that together.
