Members of the armed forces will be sent in to plug staffing gaps in the health service as ambulance drivers walkout over the festive period Unions have said the Army is “no substitute” for qualified healthcare staff after details of the Government’s plans to enlist military personnel to step in for striking ambulance drivers and border staff were announced.
Plans have been drawn up for 1,200 members of the armed forces to be sent in to plug staffing gaps in the health service and Border Force as staff walk out over the festive period.Soldiers are not legally allowed to drive “blue light” cases which involve going through red traffic lights. “The military’s no substitute for trained ambulance staff as the Government knows,” Ms Gorton told the“The hours spent on contingency planning could have been better used trying to prevent the strikes from taking place.”
