Unions want NSW Labor to lead the way on cracking down on a ‘loophole’ that allows employers to cut workers’ pay and conditions to gain leverage in bargaining.
Unions will push to ban future Labor governments in NSW from axing workers’ pay and conditions during bargaining as pressure mounts on the Albanese government to immediately stamp out the industrial tactic.
Unions NSW secretary Mark Morey said that “agreement termination has no place in Australian wage bargaining and the NSW Government can lead the way in stamping it out”. However, Employee Relations Minister Damien Tudehope, who is also party to the Sydney Trains negotiations, has allegedly told unions that he raised termination as an option to cabinet’s expenditure review committee, which oversees agreement costings.
“If the Government were left with no alternative to seeking termination, we would provide an undertaking to maintain salaries, rates of pay and allowances.”
