Chris Patten, the last governor of Hong Kong, says the idea that China would become more democratic as its citizens became wealthier was delusional.

“I’m delighted to be able to demonstrate that as the last governor of Hong Kong, that I do actually exist, that I’m not a figment of my imagination,” Patten said, referencing the proposed textbooks.if Europe’s reliance on Russian gas served as a lesson for decoupling from China, Patten said he had seen first-hand how China required silence from its customers.

“We actually have to work together as liberal democracies; otherwise you get bullied one by one,” he said.
