The North Alabama Conference of the United Methodist Church voted to approve the disaffiliation of 198 congregations on Dec. 10, 2022. In the biggest day yet for the ongoing United Methodist split in Alabama, 198 congregations officially left the denomination after a vote by the North Alabama Conference meeting Saturday at the BJCC to approve their departure.
“Today is an emotional day for North Alabama United Methodists,” said United Methodist Bishop Debra Wallace-Padgett, head of the North Alabama Conference. “We are saddened that 198 of our congregations have decided to disaffiliate from The United Methodist Church. This morning’s worship was an opportunity to say goodbye well and to honor each other and God, as our witness to Christ’s grace and love. We wish those departing congregations well and want them to succeed.
There will still be at least one United Methodist church in each county of the region, Wallace-Padgett said. Seven of the churches departing claim more than 1,000 on membership rolls: Asbury in Madison with 3,504 members; Vestavia Hills , Clearbranch , Guntersville First , Cove at Owens Cross Roads , Hartselle First , and St. Mark in Northport .
