In a bid to tackle climate change, the Biden administration has outlined an aggressively ambitious plan that would revolutionise the automotive industry.
The new standards, unveiled by the White House and the EPA on Tuesday , would apply to car models between 2027 and 2032.
Although electric vehicles would not be mandated, it has been projected that as many as 67 per cent of vehicles sold by 2032 will be all-electric.The EPA said if enacted, it would avoid 7.3 billion tonnes worth of carbon emissions through to 2055, which is the equivalent of eliminating all greenhouse gases from the whole transport sector for four years.
It said the move would bring “significant” health benefits by reducing the fine particulate matter that can lead to premature deaths, heart attacks, and other respiratory illnesses. In a statement the EPA Administrator Michael Regan said the ambitious targets are “readily achievable”. “We are delivering on the Biden-Harris Administration’s promise to protect people and the planet, securing critical reductions in dangerous air and climate pollution and ensuring significant economic benefits like lower fuel and maintenance costs for families,” he said. Our manufacturing and science investments are the most significant in modern history. We're investing in America, and it's working.
