Family and friends of a man killed in a Tasmanian gold mine in 2020 say the $150,000 fine for the company is a 'bloody joke' — calling on Tasmania to join the rest of the country in implementing industrial manslaughter laws.

The magistrate told the family the fine imposed on the company, a tenth of what was available, had "no bearing on the value" of the life of mine worker Cameron Goss .

Unity Mining owned the Henty Gold Mine when, on January 23, 2020, an underground passage collapsed, killing bogger operator and Queenstown local Cameron Goss. She said it was particularly important that the family knew that any fine she imposed had "no bearing on the value of Mr Goss's life".She then convicted the company, directors of which were listening in over the phone, and imposed a $150,000 fine.Speaking outside the courtroom after the sentence was handed down, a friend of Mr Goss's family called the fine a "bloody joke".

She said the prosecutor had submitted there was a "disjointed archiving system" and "contradicting information" associated with mine passages, and that was not challenged by the company's lawyers. The court heard that by pleading guilty the company accepted it had access to the contradictory information, and that should have alerted it to the inaccuracies and the "extreme risk" presented.
