Child tax credit and housing benefit will be replaced by Universal Credit in September
Older state benefits including Child Tax Credit and Housing Benefit will soon be replaced in Lancashire and Cumbria as a major government rollout continues.
Universal Credit is replacing six old-style payments known as legacy benefits. These are Child Tax Credit, Housing Benefit, Income Support, income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance , income-related Employment and Support Allowance and Working Tax Credit. The Department for Work and Pensions is currently focusing on people who claim tax credits, who will be sent a letter telling them to switch to Universal Credit instead.
DWP guidance on the move to Universal Credit says: "Tax credits are coming to an end, and most people will need to apply for Universal Credit instead. Look out for a letter called a Universal Credit Migration Notice from the Department for Work and Pensions explaining what you'll need to do, and by when.
