At least 100 Australian climate tech start-ups need to raise capital in the next nine months to avoid going bust, but say the bar for investment is sky-high.
At least 100 Australian climate tech start-ups are at risk of shutting down in the next nine months without an urgent capital injection, threatening to set the industry’s growth back years, according to the sector’s leading community network.Universal Hydrogen’s cash had come from investors including Australian Peter Barrett’s fund Playground Global and Andrew Forrest’s Fortescue, as well as Airbus Ventures, Toyota and General Electric.
“There’s also so much in that sector that isn’t about tech that still needs to be solved – working with regulators, industrial behaviour and needs, how to interact with the grid. Even before a business is revenue generating, Dr Parsons said investors wanted proof of a commercial pathway, so start-ups needed to be forming partnerships with potential clients from the beginning.
