The University of Wollongong says it acknowledges that January 26 is not a day of celebration for all Australians, following similar moves by other prominent employers.

"That's why, out of respect for all First Nations peoples, in January 2023 all fixed-term and permanent employees of the university will have the flexibility to work on January 26 instead of taking the day as a public holiday," the statement said.The move has been supported by staff unions. UOW vice-chancellor Patricia Davidson said the decision was an important step in ensuring its staff's diverse perspectives were valued and respected.
