University of Houston football position analysis: Special teams
Wilkins has been a steady presence for three seasons at punter, averaging a career-high 43.7 yards last season. After that, however, there is uncertainty in the Cougars’ special-teams unit with projected newcomers at kicker and in the return game.
Ramsey was a surprise to the transfer portal in April, leaving the Cougars with Alabama kicker Martin and Mendez as the only kickers on the roster. The plan coming out of the spring was to use Ramsey on field goals and extra-point attempts and Martin on kickoffs. Now the Cougars will need to re-evaluate things in preseason camp. Martin, who spent two seasons at Alabama and two at Troy has handled kickoffs almost exclusively in his college career with only one field goal attempt.
Gately is as reliable as they come at long snapper with 34 career games. He has not allowed a blocked field goal in 195 snaps. The return game will have a new look with the departure of Nathaniel “Tank” Dell and Jayce Rogers . Peyton Sawyer and Matthew Golden are among the top candidates to handle kickoffs, while Sawyer could also see time on punts. Sawyer averaged 22.4 yards on 13 kickoff returns last season and Golden averaged 23.2 yards on five returns.
