If the 7,000 Pitt employees vote to unionize, it would be the latest public sector union formed in Pennsylvania in decades.
Rep. Dan Miller, D-Allegheny County, surrounded by union activists, spoke at Monday's kickoff to Union Organizing Week in the Capitol Rotunda after University of Pittsburgh staff filed paperwork to hold a union election. June 5, 2023 DaniRae RemmoThe staff of the University of Pittsburgh on Monday filed paperwork in Harrisburg in a bid to hold the largest public sector union election in decades.
The union election filing with the Department of Labor & Industry now opens up the opportunity for 7,000 workers to vote on whether or not to form a union. More than 50% of the staff must vote to unionize for it to be certified by the National Labor Relations Board.
In 2019, Pittsburgh’s graduate students failed by 37 votes to form a union. Union organizers appealed the ruling, saying that the university engaged in unlawful tactics to encourage workers to vote against unionizing. Officials denied the statement, and in 2021, the state labor board upheld the union’s failure.
